Oakleigh Eye Centre was started by Dr. Robert Norman Mellor in the 1970s. It was a completely different era for specialists as most were located in Collins Street. Being a pioneer in his field, Dr. Mellor recognized that patients wanted specialist medical treatment outside the CBD. The Oakleigh Eye Centre has been part of the local community for more than 40 years.
After Dr. Mellor retired, Dr. Mark Steiner acquired Oakleigh Eye Centre in 1992. Dr. Helen Steiner, his sister, joined the practice soon afterwards. It was originally situated in the Oakleigh shopping centre for many years and moved to the present location in 2003. It is a purpose built medical facility with plenty of space and ample off-street parking located at 135 Warrigal Rd. Hughesdale.
Oakleigh Eye Centre is a Community based Ophthalmology practice which caters to the needs of individual patients rather than some other larger practices where patients may feel lost within the system going from room to room. Drs. Mark and Helen feel that personalized, individual care for each patient is paramount. Treatment options are discussed with patients and their families so that the most effective management plan is in place. Referring Doctors and Optometrists are regularly informed so they can contribute to patient management.
Oakleigh Eye Centre caters for all ages and for all general ophthalmology problems. This includes:
Oakleigh Eye Centre is well equipped with modern diagnostic equipment and lasers for the treatment of various ocular diseases. This includes treatment for Macular Degeneration and swelling where there have been huge advances in saving sight. We have expertise in diagnosing and treating Macular diseases using the latest techniques including OCT. Minor procedures can be done on site, without the need to be referred elsewhere but more complex operations like cataract surgery need to be done in a day procedure centre. This can be at Waverley Private Hospital for insured patients and Eye and Ear for uninsured patients. There is plenty of parking available on site and a ramp for disabled patients.
